ASL 2010 - Intermediate American Sign Language I

3 sem hrs cr

A course that provides in-depth experience in conversing in American sign language, as well as the mastery of 100 widely used American sign language idioms.  Prerequisite: ASL 1020   

In rare and unusual circumstances, a course prerequisite can be overridden with the permission of the Department Lead for the discipline.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to…

  • interpret an additional 100 widely used American sign language idioms.
  • apply the principles of glossing, text analysis, and ASL grammar to classroom and interpersonal conversations.
  • analyze and then interpret deaf cultural humor appropriately.
  • analyze and appropriately interpret humor for bi-cultural and bi-lingual acceptance.
  • create and accurately interpret a family history presentation.
  • analyze and correctly interpret cultural idioms. 
  • use appropriate non-manual adverbial markers with appropriate classifiers.
  • generate fluent, intelligible general ASL conversation within the deaf community and be able to converse using culturally and politically relevant topics.
  • critically analyze and translate written text into ASL. 
  • show knowledge and respect to deaf culture.
