ASL 1010 - Beginning American Sign Language I3 sem hrs cr
An introductory study of the language that deaf adults in America use among themselves. This course includes an introduction to the deaf culture and to the basic structure of its language, as well as the mastery of finger spelling and 400 signs.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will…
- produce signs and be able to prepare and sign a cohesive signed story.
- translate ASL sentences and stories signed by the instructor.
- construct a collaborative ABC story using a historical and traditional form of ASL storytelling technique.
- discuss key historical events and the impact and implication of these events on Deaf Culture.
- create a presentation on the history of ASL in America.
- understand and effectively use approximately 3000 basic grammatically correct signs.
- exhibit the practical skills and knowledge necessary for basic cross-cultural interactions.
