RELS 2020 - Religions of the World

3 sem hrs cr

This course will introduce the study of global religions, including their foundations, core beliefs, followers, and histories. It will also include on-site visits to various religious institutions and discussions with various clergy of the included religions.  Prerequisite: Exemption from or completion of ENGL 0810  and READ 0810  

In rare and unusual circumstances, a course prerequisite can be overridden with the permission of the Department Lead for the discipline.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will…

  • learn the foundational history, beliefs, and traditions of major world religions.
  • be able to discuss and explain differences and similarities between these religions.
  • analyze and compare the historical foundations of these religions, as compared to their “mythologized” creations.
  • gather, examine, and present data collected during the course’s scheduled visits to religious sites and explain the significance of their conclusions.
  • demonstrate the significance of these religions and their contributions to the modern world.
