SOCI 1040 - Social Problems

The sociological perspective of the understanding of and solutions for some of the major current problems confronted in American society is examined. Included are such issues of social concern as poverty, social deviance, environment, energy, population, health, education, and medical care. Prerequisite: Exemption from or completion of ENGL 0810  and READ 0810  

In rare and unusual circumstances, a course prerequisite can be overridden with the permission of the Department Lead for the discipline. 

This course may include proctored exams which must be completed on campus or at an instructor-approved proctoring center which may require additional costs to the student. Please consult your instructor for additional details.

By the end of this course, students will be able to…

  • learn to apply sociological perspectives in order to place personal problems within the larger societal context.
  • explain the personal, interpersonal, and societal consequences of the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
  • identify the varied consequences of crime in regard to the quality of American life.
  • identify the factors that lead people to be violent, including societal factors that impinge on the violent individual.
  • identify the kinds and the extent of family problems.
  • understand the extent and origins of the problems facing minorities, including, but not limited to: race/ethnicity, sex/gender, social class, sexual orientation, etc.
  • discuss how the problems of government and politics as well as war and terrorism affect the quality of life.
