EDUC 2000 - Introduction to Education

3 sem hrs cr

An overview of the role and legal responsibilities of the classroom teacher with an emphasis on current teaching strategies and best practices in education. The course also provides instruction in classroom management, student academic learning levels and diverse backgrounds, the workings of a school, a brief history of education, the components of an effective lesson plan, incorporating technology into instruction, as well as preparing effectively for the hiring process. Observation/field experience/service learning is required for this course.

(Note: An additional cost of a criminal background check and liability insurance may be required for the observation/field experience/service learning. Students may also be required to attend an out-of-class orientation and/or professional development event.) Prerequisite: Documented eligibility for collegiate English

In rare and unusual circumstances, a course prerequisite can be overridden with the permission of the Department Lead for the discipline.

  • demonstrate the characteristics of an effective professional teacher and explore the role and responsibilities of a PreK–12 teacher to make an appropriate career choice.
  • explore educational topics and strategies during class discussions, assignments, and observation/field experience/service learning.
  • recognize historical, political, social, and economic factors that affect American education as well as how student backgrounds and home-life situations can impact their learning.
  • describe multiple classroom management techniques that will meet the needs of a diverse classroom population and are aligned to a professional code of ethics.
  • identify various student academic learning levels and learning preferences in order to differentiate tasks and assignments.
  • Identify the key components of an effective lesson plan by exploring the importance of state academic standards.
  • utilize technology as an integrated tool and apply collaborative problem-based learning to enhance the teaching and learning process.
