ECED 2390 - Creative Development

Creative development provides strategies for promoting creative development of the young child ages birth through eight. Topics include understanding the concept of creativity: what it is, why it is important, and how the development of creativity relates to art, music, movement, and drama. Field experience is required. (Formerly ECED 2090)

The learner will…

  • describe the developmental theories of creativity as they relate to the areas of physical, cognitive, social and emotional, and linguistic domains including bilingual/multilingual development
  • describe the role of play in a child’s growth across the developmental sequences in the creative arts. 
  • explain the difference between process vs. product in the arts. 
  • discuss strategies for stimulating creativity, including questioning, problem-solving, investigations and inquiry for use throughout an integrated curriculum. 
  • create, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate creative materials and experiences with a perspective of diversity. 
  • examine effective strategies for involving families and communities in supporting creative development in young children.
