ECED 2380 - Language and Literacy in Early Childhood

Language and Literacy in Early Childhood focuses on research-based principles and practices for providing young children ages birth through eight with a strong foundation in language and literacy, using a developmentally appropriate approach. Field experience is required.

The learner will…

  • identify the central concepts and the learning continuum for early language and literacy. 
  • design effective culturally responsive teaching strategies for involving families in supporting language and literacy in young children. 
  • examine and select informal tools for assessing children’s language development and literacy learning. 
  • utilize multi-dimensional and pedagogical knowledge when planning and implementing appropriate learning experiences for children to support the development of early language and literacy skills. 
  • evaluate and reflect on early language and literacy experiences for children using pedagogical content knowledge that results in a plan for modification of teaching practices.  
  • interpret how technology can be integrated to support the development of early language and literacy in the curriculum.
